B+A News: Rad (and effective) Coachella & SXSW Marketing

ROCK On!! This weekend wrapped up the first weekend of the 2015 Coachella Music Festival. As one of the biggest industry events of the year, the indie-rock fest drew hundreds or thousands of attendees. Ticket sales sold out within hours of being opened to the public. With one more weekend coming up, there are still THREE MORE DAYS of parties, music, debauchery and insanely awesome branding.

While the music junkies are jamming out to electric guitars and strobe lights in April, the techies all headed to South by Southwest (SXSW) in March. As most everyone knows, the SXSW festival is a huge event combining music, movies, interactive and conferences. While attendees tend to age up compared to the youngsters running around at Coachella, SXSW is still friggin’ rad (hey, we’re from Utah). The event highlights the most innovative technology in the world. Pretty. Dang. Rad.

Trust us, brands and companies know they have to connect with the influencers and attendees of both Coachella and SXSW. Each one of them faces the challenge of creating the coolest-most-memorable experience the desert can offer. Some of the best experiential marketing campaigns of the year surround these two annual events. Obviously we’re quite fond of great branding…in fact, it’s sort of our obsession. We appreciate the nuances, the details, the weak, the strong and everything in between all of the quirky pop-culture party details.

Disney – Disney knocked it out of the park with their experiential marketing campaign for Coachella. Guests received complimentary Minnie Mouse manicures and Tinkerbell tattoos.  Hats off to Disney for CUTENESS.


Hawaiian Tropic – The suncare product created a relaxing atmosphere to beat the desert heat offering free yoga and massages. Guests posed with sunscreen giveaway items and lounged in seating areas. Hats off to Hawaiian Tropic for CHILLNESS.

H&M – H&M hosted a pool party bash and featured custom light up beach balls with the words ‘H&M Heart Coachella’ aptly across them. We gotta say this, sorry, but…that’s a promo item that seamlessly works with a marketing campaign. We dig it. Hats off to H&M for CHICNESS.

Switching gears, we’re highlighting our fave SXSW marketing campaigns and techniques.


Mastercard + Mashable – Mastercard partnered up with info-centric site Mashable to host one of the most fun and interactive contests at SXSW – the Priceless Elevator Pitch. Contestants were given a chance to step into a real elevator and give their 60-second pitch of their grand business idea. Winners won $15,000 to make their dream a reality. Hats off to Mastercard & Mashable for ENTREPRENEUR-NESS.


– The always forward, Toyota, allowed drivers to learn a valuable lesson in their Distracted Driving Simulator course. Participants put on simulator glasses and tried navigating their car through several distraction courses. The event was fun and it made an impression with guests. Hats off to Toyata for awesome FUTURE-NESS.


HootSuite – What’s better than a charging station? A charging station trolley that takes you from event to event at SXSW. That’s exactly how HootSuite made its presence known at SXSW. What a great way to get people talking, amiright? Hats off to HootSuite for straigh-up FUNNNESS!
