Brand+Aid’s Take on Women in Business and Why it Matters

Renya-Women in Business

Did you know that Brand+Aid is a woman-owned business? Yep, in fact, we’re even certified and registered with the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), which puts us in the company of some of the best and most prestigious companies in the world. We’re proud to be woman-owned, and in today’s blog post, we explore just how important and cool it is to be a woman in business today.

Why it Matters

Our founder, Renya Nelson, is carving out a new path in the promotional marketing and advertising world. According to 3% Conference, a global conference that highlights the gender disparity in advertising, just 11% (up from 3.6% just five years ago) of the world’s creative directors in advertising and marketing are female. Shocking, right? What’s even more surprising is that woman actually hold 81% of purchasing and consumer household spending power; this huge disparity has left over 90% of female consumers reporting that advertisers don’t understand them.

So, why does it matter if a business is woman-owned or actively works to level the gender-playing field? Kat Gordon, CEO of the 3% Conference, explains it best saying:

“If you have two people working together that think alike, then one of them is redundant. The more varied the people who come up with ideas – the more men AND women – the more varied the ideas will be. Diversity = creativity = profitability.”

Brand+Aid’s Approach

Brand+Aid is not your typical promotional marketing agency. In an industry that’s predominantly male and typically skews older, our team, led by Renya, is run by a mix of 20-something and early-30’s marketing professionals. We’re exactly 50/50 in terms of men-to-women.

Our team loves creating innovative, badass campaigns for the world’s best brands. Gildan T-shirts with a 1-color logo? Nahhhh, it’s not our thing (and it’s not our client’s thing either). Brands deserve more, and we want to give it to them. We love to create custom products and smartly-designed promotional merchandise that engages with consumers and produces a strong ROI.

By actively working to promote diverse ideas and viewpoints – like specializing in Millennial campaigns and understanding the female consumer – we’ve been able to build relationships with some of the biggest brands in the world. In just five short years in business, we’ve worked with Emirates Airlines, Cricket Wireless, Walmart, Levi’s, Creative Artists Agency (CAA)… the list goes on. It’s something we’re so stoked and proud to share.

Community Outreach & Press

While we’re excited about the progress of women-owned businesses and opportunities for women in business, we know there’s still a lot of work to be done. After all, women still make less than men for the same work, US maternity leave is still ranked last among developed countries, and company policies for working mothers and families are still paltry at best.

At Brand+Aid, we’re actively working to improve the workplace for women. In the past year, we’ve participated and/or been featured in the following events and publications working to champion women in business:

We’ve also got a few other publications in the works! Renya will represent Brand+Aid in a feature in Counselor magazine and in a piece with American Express OPEN Forum later this year.
